Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are a class of medications primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and muscle spasms. They work by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which promotes relaxation and reduces excitability in the brain. Commonly prescribed benzodiazepines include diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and alprazolam (Xanax).

While effective for short-term relief of symptoms, benzodiazepines can lead to dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal issues if used for extended periods. Therefore, they are typically prescribed for short durations, and patients are monitored closely for side effects, which may include drowsiness, confusion, and impaired coordination.
